Pinched nerve and numbness treatment in Kelantan

Numbness, tingling or a pins-and-needles feeling (kebas, or serbe in Kelantan) has many causes. We find where the nerve is being irritated, then treat the source, not just the symptom.

Where numbness can come from

A nerve can be squeezed or irritated at different points along its path. Common patterns we see at Jom Physio include:

  • Neck: a pinched nerve in the neck causing pain, tingling or numbness down the arm into the fingers
  • Lower back: a trapped nerve causing pain and numbness down the leg, known as sciatica
  • Wrist: carpal tunnel syndrome, with numb fingers that are often worse at night
  • Elbow: the ulnar nerve, causing numbness in the ring and little fingers
  • Feet: peripheral neuropathy, which often starts in the feet, especially in people with diabetes

The same symptom can come from very different places. Numb fingers, for example, may start in the neck, the elbow or the wrist, and each needs a different plan. That is why we test the whole path of the nerve before treating, instead of only treating the spot where you feel it.

Hand numbness at night

Waking up with numb or tingling hands is a common complaint. Carpal tunnel syndrome is pressure on a nerve in the wrist, and its symptoms are usually worse at night. A wrist splint, cutting down on hard gripping or vibrating tools, and hand exercises can help, and it can take months to get better. Read more: tangan kebas waktu malam and carpal tunnel.

Numb feet and diabetes

Peripheral neuropathy usually affects the longest nerves first, so symptoms often begin in the feet and slowly move upwards. For people with diabetes, better blood sugar control is part of treatment, and physiotherapy can help with muscle weakness and balance. Check your feet daily for cuts you may not feel. See kebas kaki kencing manis.

How we assess nerve problems

Our doctor and physiotherapist map exactly where you feel numbness, test strength, reflexes and sensation, and use nerve tension tests to find the level involved. Musculoskeletal ultrasound helps us look at soft tissue in areas such as the wrist and elbow. If you need a nerve conduction study, blood tests or an MRI, we will explain why and refer you; these are not done at the clinic.

Treatment options

  • Nerve gliding and posture exercises for the neck, back, wrist or elbow
  • Manual therapy to stiff joints and tight muscles around the nerve
  • HILT laser and Super Inductive System (SIS) as supporting treatment, in Pasir Puteh
  • Advice on sleep position, work setup, splints and daily habits

Nerves recover slowly, and results differ between people. We review your symptoms every visit and will not promise a cure.

When numbness is an emergency

Call 999 or go to the emergency department straight away if numbness or weakness comes on suddenly on one side of the face, arm or leg, especially with slurred speech or a drooping face, as this may be a stroke. The same applies to numbness around the genitals or anus, weakness in both legs, or new loss of bladder or bowel control.

FAQ

How long does a pinched nerve take to heal?

It varies with the cause and how long the nerve has been irritated. Some improve within weeks, others take months. We measure strength and sensation at each visit so you can see whether you are improving.

Can physiotherapy help nerve pain?

Physiotherapy is often used for nerve pain caused by a pinched or irritated nerve, using exercise, manual therapy and advice. Results vary, and some causes, such as diabetes, also need medical treatment from your doctor.

Why are my hands numb while sleeping?

A common cause is carpal tunnel syndrome, pressure on a nerve at the wrist, which is usually worse at night. A pinched nerve in the neck can also cause it. An assessment helps tell them apart.

Is numbness in the feet caused by diabetes?

It can be. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy often starts in the feet. Other causes include a trapped nerve in the lower back. See your doctor about blood sugar control, and ask us about balance and strength exercises.

Which doctor should I see for numbness?

Start with a doctor or a doctor-led physiotherapy assessment. At Jom Physio, Dr Qim and our physiotherapists assess you together and refer you for further tests or a specialist if needed. Sudden one-sided numbness is an emergency.
