Lower back pain physiotherapy in Kelantan
Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit us. We look for what is driving your pain, treat it, and teach you how to keep your back strong at work and at home.
Why lower back pain happens
Lower back pain is very common. It often comes from a strained muscle or ligament, for example after lifting, bending or a long drive. Other causes include a slipped disc, sciatica, joint stiffness and conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis. Often there is no single obvious cause, and most back pain improves within a few weeks, but it can last longer or keep coming back.
We see many patients from Pasir Puteh, Kota Bharu, Bachok and Jertih whose pain is linked to long hours sitting, heavy work on farms or in shops, and little time for exercise.
The good news is that staying active is one of the most helpful things you can do. Long bed rest tends to make the back stiffer and weaker. Physiotherapy helps you move with less fear, find the positions that ease your pain, and build strength gradually so the pain is less likely to keep returning.
Signs that physiotherapy can help
- pain that has not settled after a few weeks of staying active
- pain that keeps returning every few months
- stiffness in the morning or after sitting
- pain that stops you working, praying comfortably, driving or sleeping well
- pain that spreads to the buttock or leg, which may be sciatica
How we assess your back
Our doctor, Dr Qim, and the physiotherapy team ask how the pain started and what makes it better or worse. We check how your spine and hips move, test strength and nerves in the legs, and use musculoskeletal ultrasound when it helps to look at muscles and soft tissue. Bring any X-ray or MRI report you have; we do not do X-ray or MRI at the clinic, and we will tell you if you need further tests or a specialist.
Treatment for lower back pain
- Manual therapy to ease stiff joints and tight muscles
- Exercise for core, hip and back strength, progressed week by week
- Super Inductive System (SIS), HILT laser, shockwave or TENS as supporting treatment, in Pasir Puteh only
- Practical advice for lifting, sitting, sleeping and returning to work
Machines help with pain, but long-term change comes from movement and strength. We do not promise a cure; we track your progress at each visit. Read more in Malay: sakit pinggang and sakit belakang.
Physiotherapy or chiropractor for back pain?
Both work with the spine, but physiotherapy focuses on assessment, exercise, hands-on therapy and education so you can manage the problem yourself. At Jom Physio, a medical doctor works with the physiotherapists, which helps when we need to rule out other causes or refer you on.
When to get urgent help instead
Go to the emergency department if back pain comes with pain, tingling, weakness or numbness in both legs, loss of feeling around the genitals or anus, new difficulty peeing or controlling your bladder or bowels, chest pain, or if it started after a serious accident. See a doctor soon if you also have fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain that is worse at night and does not improve with rest.

FAQ
Should I see a physiotherapist or chiropractor for lower back pain?
Either can treat the spine. Physiotherapy focuses on assessment, exercise, hands-on therapy and teaching you to manage the pain yourself. At Jom Physio a doctor also assesses you, which helps if another cause needs to be ruled out.
How many physiotherapy sessions for back pain?
It depends on the cause and how long you have had the pain. We review progress after the first few sessions and agree the plan with you. Packages of 3, 5 or 8 sessions are available, from RM340.
Which physiotherapy machine is used for lower back pain?
In Pasir Puteh we may use the Super Inductive System (SIS), High Intensity Laser Therapy (HILT), shockwave or TENS, chosen for your condition. Machines support exercise and manual therapy; they do not replace them.
Can physiotherapy help with back pain from a disc bulge?
Physiotherapy is commonly used for disc-related back pain, with exercise, manual therapy and advice on movement. Results vary, and we will refer you to a specialist if your symptoms need it.
What if lower back pain physio is not working?
Tell us. We reassess, check whether the diagnosis or exercises need to change, and refer you to a doctor or specialist for further tests if needed.
